The banks are being listed with. And a reasonable starting price. The owner of the banks has reluctantly decided to part with much of his collection and he continues that tonight. This is the “TABBY BANK” circa 1880”s Mechanical Bank. Very little is known about the background of the “Tabby”. Fortunately, however, it is pictured for sale in the C. Rice Catalog for September 1887. Although the action is somewhat simplistic, the Tabby is a very difficult to find bank… There are no cracks, breaks or other damage and much of the original paint is still present. The last picture is from the Carey Brothers & Grevemeyer catalogue. This bank is unusual in that the subject matter is an unlikely choice for a child’s bank. The idea of a cat lying in wait and ready to pounce on a chick emerging from an egg is not what one would ordinarily call a pleasant sight or experience. That is the subject matter of the Tabby Bank. To operate, a coin is placed in the slot provided on the back of the cat. The weight of the coin dropping inside the egg causes the chick’s head to move. The bank is in proper working order and is approximately 4 1/2″ high, 4″ wide and 3 deep. Due to the rarity of this bank there haven’t been many recent sales.
