Fresh from a recent estate is an original cast iron Mechanical Bank called “JONAH AND THE WHALE”. It was made by the Shepard Hardware Co. It was patented by Peter Adams on July 15, 1890. There are no cracks or breaks and the bank is in excellent condition. It is a large well designed , impressive bank with great action. To operate, a coin is placed on the back of the figure of Jonah. The lever at the rear of the boat is pressed. The whale opens his mouth wide and the figure holding Jonah moves forward toward the whale. The figure of Jonah tilts downward as though entering the whale’s mouth, but instead the coin is thrown from his back into the whale. The whale’s mouth closes and re-opens as though swallowing the coin. The whale’s jaw continues to move up and down after the coin is deposited. The bank is 10 1/4″ long, 5 1/4″ high and 3 1/2 wide.
