The banks are being listed with no reserve. The owner of the banks as decided to part with much of his collection and he continues that tonight. This is the “BIRD ON ROOF” Mechanical Bank circa 1880’s. The bank was patented on March 5, 1878 by Elisha Stevens of Cromwell, Ct. The fact that Elisha Stevens himself designed and patented the bank adds distinction to the “Bird On Roof” bank. He was a member of the famous Stevens family and the J. Who were the outstanding manufacturers of mechanical banks. There are no cracks, breaks or other damage. The “Bird On Roof” is an attractive bank and is extremely difficult to find, especially in the. Of the one being shown here tonight. The bank is different than other mechanical banks and is unique in both action and appearance. The patent states that the main portion of the bank is made to represent a cottage having a gable roof. Said body may be ornamented with windows of Gothic or other shape. Originally, many collectors thought the building was a church, but records show it to be a cottage. To operate, a coin is placed on top of the bird’s head. Then the lever under the bird’s tail is pressed. The head and forward part of the bird drops down and the beak hits the edge of the chimney. This causes the coin to fall into the chimney. To reset, the tail of the bird is pressed down. The bank is in proper working order and is approximately 4 3/4″ long, 3 1/2″ wide and 6 1/4 high.
