The banks are being listed with no reserve. The owner of the banks has decided to part with much of his collection and he continues that tonight. This is the’ INDIAN SHOOTING BEAR Mechanical Bank designed by Charles Bailey and manufactured by the J. Originally, it was known as the “Bear Hunt” bank and was one of Stevens’ leading sellers due to the subject matter and the bright colors. Patent papers have not been located but it is believed production began in the late 1890’s or early 1900’s. There are no cracks or breaks and the bank still retains much of the original paint. Overall, it is in. This bank depicts an Indian brave, outfitted in buckskins and eagle feathers, brandishing a rifle at a rearing bear. Unlike some of the mechanical banks which represented minority groups in an unfavorable light, the “Indian Shooting Bear” portrays these first Americans with great dignity-in the form of a brave and graceful hunter. The last picture is from Sears & Roebuck’s 1908 catalogue. To operate, the lever on the rifle is pulled back and a coin is placed on top of he barrel. The lever on the base between the legs of the Indian is then pressed. The rifle fires shooting the coin into the bear. The Indian raises his head and the bear opens his mouth in surprise. On releasing the lever, the bear closes his mouth. The bank is in proper working order and has the typical Stevens’ coin trap. The bank is approximately 10 1/2″ long, 3 1/4″ wide and 7 3/4 high. This is a great opportunity to make this extraordinary bank a part of your collection.
