NORTH AMERICAN Car/Truck Lit. Tractor / Farm Literature. Goderich / Canada History. 1888 Patented Mechanical Bank – Very Good Display Condition. An item produced by J & E Stephens. Cast iron bank in the form of three animated, mechanical ball players. Consists of a Pitcher, Batter and Catcher. Place a coin in the right hand of pitcher. Push lever as shown in enlarged picture. Pitcher tosses coin towards catcher; catcher’s trap door opens, batter swings and coin goes in the catcher opening. All action is produced by pressing down one time on the lever. Retrieve coin or store it in the bottom platform; access gained by a large screw cap. Bottom of platform shows patented date. ITEM DETAILS and CONDITION. Painted cast iron construction. As seen in listing pictures, paint has flaked and chipped off in places leaving it with a perfect original patina. All pieces are physically operating in unison EXCEPT the pitcher – he is able to move his head and swing his arm BUT IS NOT ABLE TO TOSS A COIN. ALL PIECES ARE PRESENT BUT REQUIRES A PERSON OF ABILITY TO COMPLETE THE MECHANISM OPERATION. The piece is assembled with a single machine screw – its possible to remove the back of the pitcher and make the necessary repair. As it is now, pushing the lever moves the batter and catcher but NOT the pitcher. An excellent display piece and almost fully operational. A great piece at a fair price. Approximate size : 10″ long, almost 3″ wide and just over 7 tall. An excellent display piece, very collectible.
