Sharp, J & E Stevens Patented 1872 Green Frog on Red Lattice Bank, Mechanical Bank, Russell Frisbie design. Fresh From Private Collection, Approx: 4.25 H x 4.375 W. Lots of really strong original colors, particularly on frog, and no notable defects other than minor wear as shown in pictures. This was the prize from a private collector’s treasures. The bank features a realistic modeled green frog with gold tone highlights on red lattice stamped BANK. The bank operates by pressing the frog’s foot to open his mouth and then insert coin. This Bank was made by The J & E Stevens Company and designed by Russell Frisbie and is stamped on top “Pat Date Aug 20 1872″. We photographed in various lighting and from all angles to capture the item’s condition and coloring. Stevens made these in various colors and they are really nice little mechanical banks. Other than wear to lattice paint, the top frog and bottom are in very nice shape as shown in pictures. The bank seems to operate OK, but we did not try to clean or alter item. We also did not run any coins through it for obvious reasons. The mouth opens slightly when frog’s leg is pressed to allow a coin to fall into bank. It may be able to be adjusted to open the mouth more, but again, we left item as we obtained it from collection. From a close examination we are 95% sure the paint on frog, lattice and bottom plate are all original, but we feel the top flat plate that the frog sits on was touched up or coated at some time (maybe up to 100+ years back). The paint is uniform and very close, if not an exact match to bottom edge color, but we noticed what looked like a previous paint coat under one foot and maybe at another spot or two. As with any 140+ year old item, its never easy to know for sure, but you can check all pictures and use zoom if needed. We are priced far below those prices as ours has the apparent paint touch up to top plate. You can find these banks at lower prices of course, but rarely find them in this condition.
