Excellent original condition toy mechanical bank made by J. Stevens of Cromwell, Conn. In the late 1890s is now being offered out of a New England collection. This is their “Always Did’Spise A Mule” patented on April 27, 1897, as stamped on the bottom plate. This is one of their most exciting models which depicts a boy sitting on a small bench who gets kicked over backwards by the spinning mule. A coin placed into the slot at the back of the bench then drops into a slot and into the bank. The toy measures approximately 10″ long x 6″ high x 3 wide. The original paint is almost completely intact resulting from it being extremely well cared-for. The small circular coin container door is missing which is common for these banks. Stevens was founded in 1843 making a number of cast iron products including banks. For over 100 years they continued to manufacture a wide variety of toys in Cromwell until they were acquired in the 1950s.
