C1894 BLACK AMERICANA GIVE ME A PENNY CAST IRON STILL BANK By WING Mfg M-167
C1894 BLACK AMERICANA “GIVE ME A PENNY” CAST IRON STILL BANK By WING Mfg M-167. For sale is a circa 1894 Black Americana Cast Iron Wing Manufacturing Company “Give Me A Penny” still bank. This cast iron bank measures approx. 5 5/8″ tall (to the top of the Gentleman’s head), 1 5/8″ across at the base (feet), and 2 13/16 at its widest part (elbow to elbow). The bank features a wonderful, cast iron figure of a happy looking and rather well fed, African American Man with raised text in gold lettering on the front that reads “Give Me A Penny”. This is the earliest form of the bank with the turn pin closure and the whites of the eyes painted in oval form with a black center. Text cast across the shoulders on the reverse reads Pat. There are also the numbers 514 stamped on the inside of the back half of the bank as well as the penny slot on his back and an original hole in the back of his hat. It is bank M-167 from the Penny Bank Book. It has a turn pin instead of a screw which is one of the differences between the Hubley version (M-166 w/screw) and this original Wing design (M-167 w/turn pin). Another difference is the size of the A. In this Wing version, the letter A is wider than the other letters where on the Hubley version the letters are all a uniform size. The final distinguisher from M-166 is that M-167 has the first N in the word PENNY being vertical and directly below the turn pin, where M-166 does not. The bank has good original paint with some wear to his face and the red on his hat and his back/shoulder area as well as some minor chips in the black paint. The gold paint across the words Give Me was broadly applied and there appears to be little gold paint left on or around the word Penny. It is in good condition and has no physical damage to the cast iron beyond some minor oxidation. This piece was found in a box of items that belonged to my great grandparents which has sat for nearly 2 generations until we were forced to clean out an old family house. This will make a great addition to someones collection or home who can give it the proper placement it deserves.
