It was manufactured in 1880 by The J. To operate, place a coin on the top of the branch (left of owl’s head), and press the thumb-piece (lever) located behind log/branch. Condition: Paint on bank is in excellent condition. Body of owl is predominantly gray blended with brown on the front, and completely gray on back half. Log/branch is brown and yellow, with green foliate accents. Owl has yellow glass eyes. Colors are correct, but seem somewhat flat. Could possibly be an expert repaint (if, in fact, it has been repainted). Surface of this bank is extremely smooth and detailed. Bottom of bank is missing its trap. Cast iron bottom is marked, PATD SEPT. 1880, along with an indiscernible patent number. Because trap is missing, previous owner had taken the liberty of inserting a form-fitted piece of sheet metal on the inside bottom of bank, in order to prevent coins from falling out. The approximate dimension of this bank are 7-3/8″(H) x 4-1/4″ (W) x 3 (D), and weighs 2 pounds 4 ounces. Here’s a good opportunity to acquire a great looking, antique, J.
