The owner of the banks has reluctantly decided to part with much of his collection and he continues that tonight. This is the “MONKEY BANK” Mechanical Bank circa 1920’S manufactured by the Hubley Mfg. There are no cracks or breaks and the bank is in. The last picture is from Hubley’s cast iron toy’s catalogue in 1936. In a long ago era, the organ grinder, and his precocious monkey performed on street corners. Older people would often reminisce about their youth and growing up in early 20th century America. The neighborhood children eagerly gathered after hearing the first notes heralding the appearance of these street corner entertainers. It is no wonder that several mechanical were made using the monkey in the theme. Of the banks made using this theme, none is as realistic and accurate in depiction as the “Monkey Bank”. The action of the bank is amusing and uncomplicated. A coin is placed in the monkey’s mouth. The lever behind the monkey is then pressed. Simultaneously, the monkey springs forward, depositing the coin into the slot atop the organ. Deposits are removed by opening the large, square key lock retainer underneath the base. The bank is in proper working order and the key is included. It is rare to find this bank in “near mint” condition. The bank is approximately 8 3/4″ long, 3″ wide and 6 high.
