This is the “MONKEY AND COCONUT” Mechanical Bank designed by James Bowen and manufactured by the J. It is being listed with no reserve. It was patented on March 2, 1886. This bank is an outstanding example of good designing and is exceptionally well made. James Bowen truly had a real knack for a clever mechanism with split second timing. As an additional touch, Bowen even added scroll work to the bottom of the base. There are no cracks or breaks and the paint is still quite. This is just a stunning example of the “Monkey and Coconut” mechanical bank. To operate, a coin is first inserted in the Monkey’s fingers of the right hand. Then the lever located on the back of the bank is depressed. In so doing the following action takes place. The left forearm of the monkey turns raising the top half of the coconut to a vertical position. The coin is released by the thumb of the right hand and falls into the bottom half of the open coconut and on into the base. The monkey opens his mouth and rolls his eyes downward as thought watching the action. The monkey has an amusing and life-like expression. Upon releasing the lever all moving parts automatically return to their normal position. The bank is in proper working order and has the typical Stevens’ trap. The bank is approximately 8 1/4″ tall on a 3″ x 5 base. Action, this is a bank you want to have in your collection.
