It is being listed with. This is the “OWL TURNS HEAD” Mechanical Bank designed by James Bowen and manufactured by the J. The bank was patented on September 28, 1880. This is one of the few mechanical banks where the subject is a bird. There are no cracks, breaks or other damage and the bank is in. There is still an abundance of original paint on the bank. The yellows, greens and browns are all. Bright with vivid paint. There is even yellow paint evident on the Owl’s claws. If you have been waiting for an exceptional example of the “Owl Bank”, then this is the one to own. The last picture is from Montgomery Ward & Co. The operation of the bank is simple, but effective. A coin is placed at the top of the bank near the Owl’s head. The lever at the rear of the bank is depressed causing the owl’s head to turn counterclockwise which allows the coin to drop inside the owl itself. Bowen explains in the patent that he wanted to achieve the effect of the owl discovering the existence of a coin at the side of its head and reaching for it. The head then quickly returning to position, on releasing the lever, creating the effect that the owl apparently swallows the coin. The bank is in proper working order and has the typical Steven’s coin plug. The bank is approximately 4″ long, 3″ wide and 7 1/2 high.
