NEW INFORMATION—– This cast iron mechanical bank was made around 1875 by J & E Stevens and is accepted to be the FIRST MECHANICAL BANK ever made. To operate, you pull the string near the door, which causes the teller to pop up. It looks like this bank has its original hand carved teller, which is the likeness of a monkey. You place a coin in the front of the teller desk, and the weight of the coin will cause the top to shut, thus depositing the coin. These are early American toys, and the hand carved original monkey figure can also place this bank in the American folk art category.
