Kyser & Rex Mechanical Roller Skating Bank As Found Damage Antique Cast Iron Toy
This bank does have damage with missing pieces and paint loss with rust. I will describe what I see and clearly show the damage , if you would like additional photos , please message me and i will get them to you. Now for the bad news. The right front foot of the bank is broke off along with a 1 1/2 long piece of the top rink where the foot was cast to. Both skaters are bent over with bend to their connecting pins but are still attached. The woman skater is missing her head , a small boy on his back is missing from the center of the rink and the coin containment lock door is missing.. None of the broken pieces were with the bank. I looked this over under magnification and I do not see any other cracks. From what I can see it appears all internal mechanisms of the skating rink that are present are complete with no damage. I assume the spring is supposed to attach to the hub on the gear. The top rink surface has old black paint on it and surface rusting with coarse oxidization at spots. Looking up inside the coin drop and holding chamber, nothing appears broke inside. I have not cleaned this with anything , I removed the bottom plate and brushed out debris with a toothbrush and blew it off with compressed air. I put a little pressure on the bottom gears and they did start to turn but i stopped there , i didn’t want to force anything , just wanted to move the figures enough to check for cracks. I did not try to move the man holding wreath or activate the coin drop , all moveable parts need to be freed up. The clover leaf perforated base has no cracks or breaks to it , there is rusting on the inside. The rust is a bit more deep and pitted on the right side than on the left. I looked over this as well under magnification and did not see any cracks. A small spot of the black scratched off on the left does reveal some gray under it. It does look as if the black paint? Had been spilled or leaked on it rather than intentionally repainted after the damage had occurred. My guess is that this had been stored away many many decades ago , got covered under something heavy and that is what caused the damage. As just discovered at a local estate. It does appear that this was never part of any collection as the last owner. Did not have any other old cast iron toys or banks , he. Is deceased and family had no information on where it was found.. In the condition it was in , it appears it had been found in an old attic or barn as it is very dirty with debris and mud dauber nest inside and the man had just left it as found , perhaps he just kept it from his past generations’ estate as a keepsake… The last owner was in Lancaster County Pennsylvania.
