For sale is this circa 1888 J. Calamity mechanical bank with ornate base depicting early football players about to make a tackle. When the coin is set in place, the lever is depressed, the quarterback lunges forward as the right and left linebackers swing around in a circular motion, stopping his advance. This is only one of two American banks with an early sports theme: the “Darktown Battery” (baseball) and the “Calamity” (football). This particular piece is in un-restored original condition with some of the remaining original paint. All of the pieces are here, and it seems to be in good working condition. We have provided pictures of all sides with the players in both mechanical positions. The quarterback seems to be a bit loose (he rocks a bit forward and backward), but this may simply be part of the mechanics, which is different from the linebackers. This piece has all of the correct colors and markings as expected, and we see an appropriate amount of wear from use and over 100 years of time. See the last picture which shows the correct “Patent Applied for” marking on the bottom as expected. Please review all of the pictures to make sure you have a good look at the condition. This piece has a base measuring approximately 7″ long by 4.5″ wide, and the height is around 6 tall. Weighs over 4 pounds, which is the correct weight. We are not 100% certain whether all of the hardware screws and springs are original, but all other parts and pieces are definitely original. Just in time for football season to impress your friends.
