Offered, is an exceptionally rare, antique, cast iron, still bank, known as the Alphabet Toy Bank. It is a faceted, coin repository, with 26 sides. Each side displays just one letter (A through Z) of the alphabet. Accounting for all 26 letters (as only a rhombicuboctahedron can), this bank is also believed to have been marketed as an instructional toy for learning. This wonderful, old bank was manufactured in the United States, with its foundry being of unknown origin. It was likely produced in the last quarter of the 19th century. It is in very good condition, has no damage or repairs, and is rust-free. This bank still retains some of its original gold paint and possesses a rich patina. The casting of this bank is exceptionally smooth, with its surface exhibiting very fine detail. Each “framed” facet contains a boldly embossed Victorian-style letter which is superimposed on a stippled background. This bank retains, what I believe to be its original straight-head screw. The screw head has considerable wear, and “folds” into a countersunk hole (through letter “G”) located at the top of bank. Opposite end of screw is visible through threaded receptor hole (through letter “K”) at the bottom of bank, as designed. Seams of this four-piece bank fit together tightly. I have not taken this bank apart, but would assume that its interior is as clean as its exterior. Please view all photographs for best representation of item.
