Chief Big Moon Mechanical Bank, J. E. Stevens, original
Excellent condition, fully functional. Colorful original paint in gold, silver, blue, light and dark green, copper, red, white, black, dark brown, and yellow. The Indian kneels in front of a tiny tepee; stick a coin in the slot in front of the fish (in the Indian’s hands), press the tab (by the wood pile to the Indian’s left), and up comes a gigantic frog from below the pond as the Indian lifts his fish from the fire. Left to right, both sides of the bank (in bas-relief silver highlights) depict a papoose, a knife and crossed tomahawks, a male Indian bust wearing two feathers , braids, and large peace medal, crossed peace pipes, and a shield. No key, but it’s easy to retrieve coins by turning the small hatch underneath. The number “42” in orange paint seems to be a collector’s inventory number. Approximately 6 inches high by 10-1/8 inches long at base by 3-7/8 inches wide. This is one of three Stevens cast iron mechanical banks from this era–the others are Bear Hunt and World’s Fair.
