This is the “BAD ACCIDENT” Mechanical Bank circa 1890’s manufactured by the J. It was designed by Charles Bailey and is one of the most popular of the mechanical banks. There are no cracks, breaks or other damage and the paint is still bright and vibrant. Overall, the bank is in. Condition and is just a wonderful example of the “Bad Accident” mechanical bank. To operate, a coin is placed under and between the shoes of the driver. A two part lever beside the cattail is then pressed together. Immediately the boy darts out from behind the plant an turns facing the front. At the same time, the donkey, frightened by the boy, rears up on his legs. This causes the cart to tilt back. In turn the coin slides from between the shoes of the driver back into the provided slot. This bank is in proper working order and has the typical Stevens’ coin trap. Coins are removed from the trap located on the underside of the cart. The bank is approximately 10 1/2″ long, 3 1/2″ wide and 6 1/4 high.
