Up for sale is a very nice example of the “Traders Bank of Canada” cast iron still bank, manufactured c. 1891 by an unknown Canadian foundry. The bank is in great condition for a piece this old as it retains its original finish and has developed a beautiful patina over the years. It still has the original tray into which the coins would be dropped, and each compartment has its own serial number. On the front of the bank, in raised lettering, is printed ” THE TRADERS BANK OF CANADA ” and ” COLBORNE S T , ” while on the back side is just COLBORNE S T. ” Both ends of the bank have ” TRADERS BANK ” and ” YONGE S T The bank is modeled after the Traders Bank that was actually located on the corner of Colborne St. On the roof of the bank is incised PROPERTY OF THE TRADERS BANK OF CANADA REGISTERED BY AE JARVIS 1891 THE TRADER BANKS SOLE LICENSEE. Only 1500 of these banks were made and they were originally given to the bank’s best customers, who had to travel to the bank. To have the bank opened. Once it was filled with coins (the bank retained the key to the lock that was provided with the bank). The bank is complete and intact except for a missing finial on one corner, the original padlock, and the little loop part of the hasp where the padlock would have hung. Here are no breaks, cracks, repairs or other damage. As an added bonus, I’m including a postcard from 1908 with 1 ยข. Still bank is extremely hard to find, especially with original coin tray and in this condition, and would make a wonderful addition to any bank collection. Please take a close look at all the pictures as they are illustrative of the bank’s condition, and let me know if you’ve any questions or need further information.
