C. 1880 J. & E. Stevens Cast Iron OWL TURNS HEAD Mechanical Bank
Owl – Turns Head. Mechanical bank (olive version), designed by James Bowen and patented in 1880. It was manufactured by the J. Stevens Co of Cromwell, Conn. Measures about 7 1/2″ high x 3 7/8″ wide. It retains all of its original parts, and 90%+ of its original paint (blacklight shows no repaint or touch ups). The mechanism works well and as it should: place a coin on the top of the branch, press the thumb piece at the bottom rear of the bank, and the owl turns his head and deposits the coin. The bank has no issues other than some playwear (no cracks, chips, breaks or other damage, and no repairs) and it includes the coin trap, so if you’re a collector of mechanical banks, take advantage of the opportunity to own a very nice example of this one.
