This antique vintage cast iron mechanical penny bank was called the Speaking Dog Bank. It was first manufactured by Shepard Hardware Co. Cromwell, Ct took over the Shepard line of banks and produced it under their name. The Shepard version has the distinctive rectangular coin trap (this one is the rectangular version) and the Stevens version has their round trap. The bank was based on Patent no; 328,723 issued to Charles G. Shepard and Peter Admans Jr. On October 20, 1885. To operate, place a coin on the girl’s tray and press the lever in front of the dog. The girl’s arm moves and the coin falls from the tray and is deposited into the bank. Simulatneously, the dog’s mouth opens and closes and his tail wags. Bank seems in excellent condition except for missing the door plate to get the coins, minor rust on the bottom but no cracks or other repairs. Measures approximately 7″ x 3″ 7.
