Stevens was founded by John & Elisha Stevens in 1843 in Cromwell (locally known as Frog Hallow). There first line was hardware, which kept them afloat until John Hall walked through the door with a patented design moving parts bank. He called it Excelsior and the toy was to revolutionize the world of cast iron toys. Stevens produced Hall’s toy around 1870. Within two or three years the company began to produce its own banks in prodigious numbers and variety. By 1890, Steven had dropped its hardware line and produced only toys.
