Cast Iron MOTHER AND CHILD aka BABY MINE Mechanical Bank Original Antique
The owner has decided to part with some of the finest pieces in his collection and he continues that tonight. This is the “MAMMY AND CHILD” Mechanical Bank manufactured by the Kyser & Rex Co. It was patented October 21, 1884 by Alfred C. This is one of the few mechanical banks with two coin slots. The theme and idea of the action is quite original, with the coin in one case representing food or medicine being given to the baby. In addition to the unique feature of the two coin slots the subject matter is also one of a kind among mechanical banks. There are no cracks, breaks or other damage and the paint is still strong and bright. This is a rare bank and overall it is in. The last picture is from Best & Co. S catalogue of the 1880’s. The slot in the apron is used for coins including quarters and half dollars. To operate, the coin can be placed in the pocket of the Mammy. The operating lever is the depressed downward. When the lever is depressed the Mammy lowers her head as though watching what she is doing. At the same time she turns her right hand lowering the spoon to the open mouth of the baby, so that the tip of the spoon touches the lower lip of the baby. In conjunction with this action the legs of the baby rise upward and the coin in the apron drops into the bank. The bank is in proper working order. The coin trap is included but is not secure. It doesn’t lock properly. The bank is approximately 5″ long, 4″ wide and 8 tall. This colorful bank will make a valuable addition to your collection.
