The White City Puzzle and Safe no. 2 is an original souvenir from the Chicago World’s Fair / Columbian Exposition of 1893-95, made by Nicol and Company in the US. The bank was manufactured as a representation of the “burgler proof” safes used in bank vaults during that period. The reference “White City” was Chicago’s nickname at the time denoting the temporary building facades designed by architects for the expo, which were stuccoed and painted white. This bank is in original condition with minimal wear and no restorations, repairs, cracks or breaks. It shows the usual patina, chips, scuffs and wear that are to be expected from age and play. The raised images and letters are still crisp and clear with pictures of the World’s Fair government buildings on each side and the Great Ferris Wheel on the back panel. It measures 4 7/8″ tall, 3 5/8 ” wide and deep and weighs about 2 pounds. Despite the misdirection, I’m told that you only need need to unscrew the screw to the left of the non functioning combination dial. There is also a screw on the bottom. I have not tried to open it, I will leave that discovery to the new owner. This will come to you from a fragrance free home, however I do have pets.
