Vintage Cast Iron Hubley Still Bank Duck in Top Hat On Red Tub Original Paint
For Your Penny Bank Collection – DuckBank1. Description: A beautiful vintage cast iron still penny bank. It is cast in the form of a duck wearing a top hat, holding an umbrella under his arm and standing on top of a red tub. The umbrella has a red handle and the tub has the words “SAVE FOR A RAINY DAY” in raised letters on the side. The duck is painted in an off-white colors with the top hat the umbrella in black. The bank is made of two halves held together with a screw. We opened the bank and it was unmarked on the inside as it is on the outside (see the last photo). We believe the bank is all original including the paint and the screw. It is very well cast and shows nice details of the feathers, the umbrella, the head with the eyes and bill, and the duck’s feet. This bank was made by Hubley in the period 1930 through 1938. See page 1 (bank 616) of Andy and Susan Moore’s book “The Penny Bank Book; Collecting Still Banks” Published by Schiffer Books, of Exton, PA in 1984 for a similar example. The bank has the coin slot on top of the Duck’s back near the tail. Please carefully review the Photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description. Date: 1930 – 1938. Size: Measures approximately 5 1/2″ in height to the top of the hat and the base is 3″ in diameter. The piece weighs over one pound and three ounces. Distinguishing Characteristics – Most Interesting About The Piece: Very nice relatively scarce bank in excellent condition. Definitely a quality piece that is all original. It is a well made and would make an excellent addition to your still penny banks collection. For a similar example see page 91 in Andy and Susan Moore’s Book The Penny Bank Book; Collecting Still Banks, Published by the Schiffer Publishing Company in 1984. Condition: Bank is in excellent condition with no repairs or breaks. It retains quite a bit of its original paint but shows surface wear and some minor paint losses especially on the edge of the of the hat’s rim, the edge of the tub, the edges of the umbrella, and the tip of the duck’s bill. The bank is bit soiled and has scratches and dings and surface losses of the paint, but still retains quite a bit of its original paint (estimate >90%). It also shows minor signs off rust especially on the base and the inside. Be that as it may, it is in great condition and looks great. Please see photos for additional condition information.
