Ca. 1900 EX. RARE IRON FRONT BUILDING STILL BANK With CLOCK & ELABORATE PAINT
In this listing we are offering an extremely rare cast iron front building still bank with clock. We are estimating this bank to date circa 1900 or so. The delicate thin flat cast iron front has wonderful painted details which give the impression of three dimensions. The paint is entirely original in all respects. There are no touch ups to the paint. There are no breaks & no repairs & no replaced components. The small stack on the viewer’s left side of the roof of the bank has a little bend & a bit of paint loss. Otherwise, the paint on the front is in gorgeous condition. The tin back section has some paint loss & some areas of rust. The tin section under the base has some surface rust & is rough to the touch. But, the most important element of this extremely rare still bank, being the front of the bank, is truly an exciting joy to behold! This marvelous bank was recently found fresh out of a Berks County, Pennsylvania estate. In our 58 years of being interested in antique toy banks we have only seen one other example which was in far lesser condition than the one which we are offering. This bank has a thin beautiful & very smooth cast iron front. The front is guaranteed to be iron & has been tested with a magnet. The back section which houses the clock as well as the coin slot & the coin box is made of tin. When the top lever on the left side of the back is pushed to the left the coin slot is opened for insertion of coins. To the left of that is a knob which turns smoothly to set the time on the clock. Below that knob is a curved opening with a slight metal projection. We do not know what function that serves. Slightly to the left is an opening into which a key is needed to be inserted to wind the clock. WE DO NOT have a key to wind the clock so the clock has not been tested. Along the bottom edge on the back is the coin box. WE DO NOT have a key to open the coin box. The tin case on the back left is marked “RHENUS”. We do not know if this was the name of the maker of the clock mechanism &/or the maker of the bank. The length across the bottom front edge is 6 3/16 inches. The height is 6 7/8 inches & the depth is 2 inches. The weight is 1 pound & 4.1 ounces. An extremely rare & fascinating still bank. This item is inventory #11,614.
