Old Mechanical Cast Iron Bank Description and Item Information Up for sale is this old mechanical cast iron Teddy and the Bear bank. Please excuse any glare in the photos. This bank has red, green, white, and black paint, with honest wear. The mechanical action is thus: you load a coin into Teddy’s rifle, press hard! On the push button, the coin goes into the slot, and the bear’s head pops out of the tree. The coin can be removed from the bottom of the bank, where there is a round hole that does not have a stopper. The casting has nice details on the tree trunk, the leafy foliage, and Teddy’s clothing. The bank was put together with slotted screws. This item measures approximately 9 1/8 inches by 7 1/4 inches by 2 5/8 inches. Unpacked, it weighs 5 pounds 1.6 ounces. This would be a neat addition to a collection of mechanical banks. Identification This is marked, “TEDDY AND THE BEAR, ” as shown. It has no other markings. The exact age is not known, but this is either vintage or antique. I do not know where it was manufactured. It is from a Northern California estate. Condition The bank looks good overall, with worn paint (looks like honest wear), light soiling, and minor oxidation. The mechanism works, but you have to push hard on the button to get the rifle to fire and to get the bear’s head to pop up. If you do not push as hard, the rifle will fire, but the bear’s head does not pop up. The lid that covers the bear’s head does not sit flat. There is no stopper beneath to hold coins inside the bank.
