An Original 19th Century Working. Antique 1897 J&E Stevens Cast Iron Always Did Spise a Mule Mechanical Bank Works. This cast iron black Americana bank is in the form of a Black man and a mule. When you put a coin behind the boy and then push the button in front o the mules hind legs, the mule spins and kicks the boy over and deposits the coin. It reads Always did’Spise a Mule. On the base It measures approximately 5 + 7/8 inches at it’s highest point, 10 inches long, and 3 inches at it’s widest point. It is marked Pat’d April 22, 1879 and was manufactured by J & E.
