This is the “DARKTOWN BATTERY” Mechanical Bank circa 1888 designed by James Bowen and manufactured by the J. Initially it was known as the “Base Ball” bank. It was patented January 17, 1888. To operate, the pitcher’s arm is first pulled back into position In so doing, his head lowers forward and down and the parts snap like a clamp. The lever is then pressed down and immediately the pitcher throws the coin toward the catcher and his head snaps back into position. Simultaneously, the batter raises his bat high and turns his head from right to left as though watching the coin. The catcher moves his head forward and his left hand in toward his body so that the coin actually goes inside his body and drops into the base of the bank. The bank is in proper working order and has the typical Stevens’ coin trap. The bank is approximately 10″ long, 2 3/4″ wide and 7 1/4 high.
