C. 1873 J. & E. Stevens Cast Iron Mechanical Novelty Bank Red, White & Blue
“Novelty Bank, ” designed by Chas. Johnson and patented in 1872 &1873 (see incised dates on the back). It’s one of the earliest cast iron mechanicals, and was manufactured by the J. Stevens Co of Cromwell, Conn. The piece measures 6 3/4″ high x 5 3/8″ wide x 5 3/8 deep and retains its original red, white, and blue painted exterior finishes, and yellow, red. And brown interior finishes. (I would grade the bank overall as near pristine, with 95%+ paint). The mechanism is still very strong, and it works smoothly and as it should: open the door and place a coin on the tray, then lightly touch the door to engage the spring mechanism that pulls the door closed and deposits the coin. This is a hard to find mechanical bank in this condition: original, complete, with no issues (no cracks, chips, breaks or other damage, and no repairs). And it displays beautifully. If you’re a collector of mechanical banks, take advantage of the opportunity to own a very, very nice example of this one. Please check the pictures as they are an integral part of the description.
