J. & E. STEVENS c. 1897 CAST IRON I ALWAYS DID’SPISE A MULE MECHANICAL BANK
I Always Did’Spise a Mule – B. Oy Seated on Bench. Mechanical bank (yellow base version), designed by James Bowen and patented in 1897. It was manufactured by the J. Stevens Co of Cromwell, Conn. Measures about 6″ high x 3″ wide x 10 long. It retains all of its original parts, including the coin trap, and it displays very well. Blacklight reveals some repaint to the upper half of the mule (and possibly to the underside of the bank), but color match is very good to the naked eye and the rest of the piece shows as original finish. The mechanism works smoothly and as it should: place a coin in the slot under the seated boy then press the knob under the mule. The mule swings around and knocks the boy over backward, depositing the coin into the bank. To reset, move the mule back into original position, locking his back foot into place, and tip the boy back onto the log. This is a hard to find mechanical bank (it lists for twice as much as the red base version), and this one has no issues (no cracks, chips, breaks or other damage, and no repairs). If you’re a collector of mechanical banks, take advantage of this opportunity to own a nice example of this one. Please check the pictures as they are an integral part of the description.
