1890 Antique Shepard Cast Iron Jonah and the Whale Mechanical Bank Wonderful
1890 Antique Shepard Cast Iron Jonah and the Whale Mechanical Bank Great Condition. A wonderful example of “Jonah and the Whale” mechanical cast iron bank made in 1890. 3 3/4″ wide, 10 1/4″ long and 5 1/4 high. Peter Adams of buffalo NY designed and patented this bank and let the Charles and Walter Shepard Hardware Co. This bank has approximately 85% – 90% of its original paint with some loss on man’s head and inside the mouth of the whale and on the yellow corners. Due to this, banks in “prime” condition are rare and demand very high prices. The bank works by placing a coin in the tray above Jonah’s head and back. Jonah is being held by a bearded man in a red robe. When a lever is push on the back, the bearded man tosses Jonah toward the whales mouth, the mouth opens, the coin goes in and the whales lower jaw bobs up and down in a chewing motion. The bottom has the patent date of July 15,1890 impressed in the cast iron. The bank includes the key to unlock the bottom to empty the coins. This is a great design and wonderful sought after bank.
