C. 1879 J. & E. Stevens Cast Iron I ALWAYS DID’SPISE A MULE Mechanical Bank
I Always Did’Spise a Mule – Jockey Over. Mechanical bank (brown base version), designed by James Bowen and patented in 1879. It was manufactured by the J. Stevens Co of Cromwell, Conn. Measures about 8″ high x 2 3/4″ wide x 10 5/16 long. It retains all of its original parts, including the coin trap, and original paint (blacklight shows no repaint or touch ups). The mechanism has a bit of an issue in that metal tab that holds the mule’s foot in place has worn down just enough so that the mule’s foot does not adequately engage (hence the reason that the bank is pictured with the mule kicking up his back legs). Normal operation is to place a coin in the jockey’s mouth, press the button under the mule and the mule bucks forward, throwing the boy into the log and depositing the coin in the slot. The mule swings around and knocks the boy over backward, depositing the coin into the bank. The bank has no issues other than wear (no cracks, chips, breaks or other damage, and no repairs), so if you’re a collector of mechanical banks, take advantage of the opportunity to own a nice example of this one.
