C 1897-1924 J & E STEVENS Nickel Plate Burglarproof House Safe Cast Iron Bank
Offered for sale is a very nice example of the “Burglarproof House Safe” cast iron bank with a key lock (a harder to find version uses a combination dial). It was patented in 1897 and manufactured by J. Sometime between that date and 1924. He bank overall is in excellent condition, with no breaks, cracks, repairs, or other damage. It measures 5 7/8 high x 4 3/4. ” wide x 4 1/2″ deep. Is ornately decorated, and retains most all of its original nickel plate finish. The bank came with a key that works, but it’s possible that it’s not original to the piece. Turn combination dial to “2, ” insert the key as far as it will go into the left slot, give the key a 1/4 turn clockwise, insert the key another 1/8 or so, then turn the key back counterclockwise to release the lock. As with any bank of this vintage, there is some minor tarnishing and areas of wear here and there, but as can be seen from the pics, it displays beautifully. This is a difficult bank to find (rated “C” in Pearce’s “Iron Safe Banks”), and it’s rare that one this nice comes along, so don’t pass up the opportunity to own it. Please check the pics as they are an integral part of the description and provide an accurate picture of the condition.
