RARE! C. 1897 J. & E. Stevens Watchdog Safe Cast Iron Mechanical Bank- Exc. Cond
Mechanical bank (painted version), manufactured by the J. Stevens Co of Cromwell, Conn. Measures about 5 7/8″ high x 4 1/2″ wide x 4 1/8 deep and retains most all of its original paint. The locking mechanism works as it should and the bank is opened by turning the combination wheel to 2-1-7. The bank works thusly: insert a coin in the lock, turn the lever, and the coin drops into the bank as the dog opens his mouth to bark. Like most of these banks, this one has lost the bellows that would have been attached to the inside of the door, so the dog’s bark is silent (but his mouth does open). There is some light playwear, but no breaks, cracks, repairs, or other issues, and this example would easily grade out as excellent plus. This is a very hard bank to find (rated “D” or “Rare” in Holz’s “The Safe Bank Book”), and it’s almost impossible to find one in this condition, so if you’re a collector of mechanical banks, you cannot pass up this opportunity to own an exemplary specimen. Please check the pictures as they are an integral part of the description. The item “RARE! C. 1897 J. & E. Stevens Watchdog Safe Cast Iron Mechanical Bank- Exc.
