Antique Cast Iron Fidelity Trust Vault/Counting House Bank By Barton Smith Co
Rare antique large cast iron still bank. “Fidelity Trust Vault”/Counting House Bank manufactured by the J. Cast Iron Still Bank measures approx. 6 1/2 tall and 5 3/4 by 5 1/2 at the base. It is made in the form of a Bank Safe or Vault and features elaborately cast panels. The Safe door features a clock face with brass hands that rotate to create the combination to the Bank and allow the door to open. Front side with “Fidelity Trust Vault” and clock / combination lock. The paper clock face is only partially [about 60% +/-] there. Bulldogs on each side – on left PAYING TELLER below – cannot read right side. Back has a female labeled CASHIER above a coin slot. There are small balls incorporated in the slot which should make it impossible to shake coins accumulated in the bottom area out of the bank. Other examples showed small drawer or box in the upper area of the vault – but none survived with this one. There is a piece broken from the top edge on the back. Also a small piece broken out from the top, right front edge. There is what seems to be surface rust in several places – mostly on the feet. Dust is included to complete the patina. A few examples I have seen had some of the trim work painted yellow or gold. Most has worn off, but some does remain, on this one. Had a picture of the tag with instructions to change the combination [currently it is long hand at 11 & short hand at 1]. IF I can locate it, it will be included. This came to me as a gift from my grandparents in the late 1950s. Time to share this gem with someone else. Please examine the pictures carefully. I have tried to show as much detail as possible.
