This bank is 8 1/2″ long, 5 1/2″ tall and 3 wide. To put a coin in the bank, you pull the mule out of his barn stall and snap him on the hook. Place the coin between his hind legs and push the button located beside the mule. He will then shoot into the barn and the coin will drop in the bank. When the mule goes into the barn, a dog will appear from the side of the barn. When the mule is out of the barn, the dog disappears into the side of the barn. Incised on the bottom of the bank: “PATD AUG 5 D 1880″. Original stopper on the bottom of the bank. There is no key but the bank can easily be opened by turning the stopper so I’m not sure there was ever a key. The condition of this bank is very good and the paint is excellent. There may be some slight rust on the inside of the bank part of the barn. The original wooden box is 9″ long, 3 1/2″ tall and 6 wide. The top slides off to reveal the bank inside, see photo #12. This wonderful mechanical cast iron bank came from a 90 year old collector’s estate and I was told it had belonged to her father. Please review the photos as they are part of the description.
