This is the “GEM BANK” Mechanical Bank manufactured by the Judd Manufacturing Co. There are no cracks, breaks or other damage and the bank is in. The “Gem” bank was one of twelve different mechanical banks designed and manufactured by Judd Mfg. Each bank produced by the firm exhibits characteristics of modest design, simplistic action, and highly detailed castings. It is likely that Judd’s objective was to make quality products at modest prices. Some of their early price catalogs bear this out. Although this is one of the smaller mechanical banks, its quality and unpretentiousness make it a wonderful addition to anyone’s collection. The last picture is from Ehrichs’s Quarterly, Winter 1879 edition. The operation of the bank is not complex. The dog is pulled back and placed into position. A coin is placed upon the tray held in its mouth. Upon lifting the tail end, the pup springs forward, thus depositing the coin into the building. Deposits are recovered by opening the screw underneath the base. The bank is in proper working order and is approximately 5 1/2″ long, 2 1/4″ wide and 3 1/2 high. This distinctive bank will make a great addition to your collection. The item “Cast Iron GEM BANK Mechanical Bank Circa 1878 Original Antique Americana Toy” is in sale since Tuesday, August 16, 2016.
