ROCHE CAST IRON “TIME SAFE” BANK. Roche Novelty Company in Bloomfield, New Jersey during the late 1890’s. The bank is shaped like a double-door safe with a raised panel containing a clock face. The top edge of the panel has an eagle with spread wings and the center portion of the panel has lettering that reads “TIME SAFE – WHAT TIME DOES IT OPEN”. For this particular bank, a switch on the reverse side can be moved when the hour hand is on the 12 and the minute hand is on the 8. This allows the bar that holds the right door in place to be removed. The bank stands about 7 1/8″ tall and measures approximately 3 5/8″ wide and 3 1/4 deep (counting knobs on doors). It’s guaranteed to be an antique E. Roche bank and not a modern reproduction. It’s pictured on page 104 in Moore’s. Condition of this collectible Time Safe bank is GOOD. The original nickel plating is almost completely worn off (remnants on the side panels). The surface has some light rust in places but generally has a nice patina. There is a horizontal crack at the center of the right door, but it still seems to be structurally sound. The bank does work and opens at the 12:40 time. Overall, this antique cast iron bank looks great and displays well. It would make a fine addition to any collection. Please take a close look at the many photos I’ve provided and judge condition for yourself. As I mentioned earlier, this bank is rated as “scarce” in Moore’s. And is seldom offered for sale on e-bay.
