The banks are being listed with no reserve and a very reasonable starting price. The owner of the banks has reluctantly decided to part with much of his collection and continues that tonight. This is the “CHIEF BIG MOON” Mechanical Bank designed by Charles Bailey and manufactured by the J. There are no cracks, breaks or other damage. The bank still retains much of the original paint after 100+ years. The “Chief Big Moon” is one of the most entertaining and interesting of the mechanical banks as their action parts are often concealed and nothing is apparent as what exactly the bank does. “Chief Big Moon” bank is an outstanding example of the clever ingenious design work of Charles Bailey. This is the rarer. The bank was patented on August 8, 1899 and assigned to the J. Originally, it was known as the “Indian Camp Bank”. The last picture is from the Baltimore Bargain House catalogue of 1899. To operate, first prepare the bank by moving the frog under the pond. Then, place a coin in front of the pond in the slot provided. Press the lever, which is somewhat hidden, and the frog springs from under the lake toward the fish. However; the Squaw lifts up the fish away from the frog. The coin meantime has been automatically deposited inside the bank. The weight of the lake top, which acts as a trap door holds the spring balanced mechanism of the frog in place. The bank is in proper working order and has the typical Stevens’ coin trap. The bank is approximately 10 1/4 long, 4″ wide and 6″ high. This is a bank you will enjoy and will make a valuable addition to your collection.
