This is the “AUTOMATIC COIN SAVINGS” Mechanical Bank. As a matter of fact in the November 1893 issue of the New Peterson Magazine there appears an advertisement offering the bank for sale. The bank is pictured in this ad. This is a fortune telling bank and was also known as the Fortune Teller Building. Since there is a bank actually named the Fortune Teller Savings Bank it was decided it should be called by its proper name of “Automatic Coin Savings Bank”. There are no cracks, breaks or other damage. The bank retains much of the original paint and overall is in. It is rare for this bank to still have the original fortune wheel, which is present here. The wheel is two sided and both sides are shown in the pictures. The original card bearing the name of George March is evident. The card is inside the bank and can be seen on the back of the bank. It reads Manufactured and for sale by Geo. N March, Patentee, 32 Hawley St. Most of the “Automatic Coin Savings” banks have replacement and not the original cards. Of these banks known to exist in private collections. To operate, a coin is placed in the provided slot at the top of the bank. This causes the wheel of fortune to turn and the motto appears in the space at the top. The accumulation of coin deposits pushes the wheel. The bank works well.
