This antique cast iron bank is the “I ALWAYS DID’SPISE A MULE” BOY ON BENCH mechanical coin bank circa 1897. It was manufactured by the J. Stevens Company in the good old united states. One of the outstanding designers of mechanical banks, James H. Bowen, patented this banks design on April 27, 1897. He had a lot to do with the popularity of mechanical banks by his ingenious use of a coin in the operations of various banks and this is one of his best. This bank enjoyed wide popularity then and it still is a favorite among mechanical bank collectors to this day. The bank is in excellent condition with original paint. There are no cracks, but the tail is broken off as it is in many of these banks. But what is sometimes missing is the round coin door, which this one has. To operate the bank, place a coin in the provided slot in the rear of the bench underneath the seated boy. Then push down the lever, just in front of the mule’s rear legs, the beast kicks up and out and turns counter clockwise facing the opposite direction. In doing so, the mechanism causes the boy to fall backward as though being kicked by the mule. The coin slides into the base. The action is very fast. Then to reset the bank for the next operation simply twist and place the mule around and place the beasts legs down and lock into place while setting the boy down and locked into his position for the next show. This wonderful and unique bank will make a great addition to any serious antique mechanical coin bank collectors collection. The bank is in excellent working condition and has the original J. Stevens’ twisting coin trap. The bank is approximately 10″ long, 3″ wide and 6 1/2 high. The item “Antique Original Cast Iron Mechanical Bank I Always Did Spise A Mule.
