This is the “CUPOLA BANK” Mechanical Bank circa 1870’s-1880’s designed by Diedrich Dieckmann and manufactured by the J. It was patented January 27, 1874. Apparently, this bank was not manufactured over a long period as evidenced by its rarity today. It has been written that there are fewer than fifty “Cupola Banks” in existence today which makes it one of the. Of the mechanical banks. The “Cupola” is an exciting and beautiful architectural bank with a detailed scalloped roof. There are no cracks, breaks or other damage. The paint is still. The cashier bears a striking resemblance to Abraham Lincoln. Many of the “Cupola” banks have a replaced figure, but this figure is original. The lettering’Pat January 27, 1874′ appears in raised letters on the front curved section of the roof. The last picture shows the patent information. To operate, the cupola is first depressed and it clicks into position. The lever (referred to as the door knocker) protruding from the front door is then pressed and the cupola flies upward. Since the action of the bank is not self evident this creates the element of surprise which is a desirable feature. The bank is in proper working order and is approximately 6″ wide, 6″ long and 8 1/2 tall. The cupola when raised wavers somewhat due to the age of the springs that move the cupola upward. The extreme rarity of the “Cupola Bank”, its impressive size and attractive colorful appearance, as well as the popularity of architectural banks, makes the Cupola Bank one of the.
