Antique Hubley Cast Iron Large and Heavy Painted Still Penny Bank Fido on Pillow
Antique Cast Iron Large and Heavy Painted Still Penny Bank Fido on Pillow. For Your Penny Bank Collection-FidoPillow1. 1920s large and heavy cast iron still penny bank in the form of a dog seated on a pillow with colorful floral design. The bank is rather large and measures 7 1/2″ by 6″ at the base and is 5 5/8 at its highest point. It also is heavy weighing about 3 pounds and 6 ounces. The bank shows Fido the dog with black and white color sitting on hind legs with his front legs supporting him. He is sitting on a fluffy pillow that is green in color and is decorated with red flowers. The corners of the pillow have tassels and the dog’s weight has obviously resulted in the pillow sinking in the middle under him. The bank is made of three pieces where the dog itself is made of two pieces held together with a screw and the pillow is the third piece to which the back piece of the dog is held to it with a second screw. The bank has the coin slot on top of the dog’s head. The bank is in very good condition with some minimum paint losses, some scratches, a few dings, and some minor rust signs on the outside. The inside of the dog shows rust and some paint runs. We opened the bank and did not see any markings. Please see page 82 (bank 443) in Andy and Susan Moor’s Book “The Penny Bank Book: Collecting Still Banks” Published by Schiffer Books in 1984, for a similar example. Please carefully review the photos presented as they are part and parcel of our description. Size: The bank measures 7 1/2″ by 6″ at the base and is 5 5/8 at its highest point. It weighs over 3 pounds and 6 ounces. Maker: According to Andy and Susan Moor’s Book “The Penny Bank Book: Collecting Still Banks” Published by Schiffer Books in 1984 this bank was made by Hubley in Lancaster Pennsylvania. Distinguishing Characteristics – Most Interesting About The Piece: This is a great and rather uncommon penny bank in excellent condition, which would make a nice addition to your collection. Condition: The bank is in very good condition. It has no chips, cracks, breaks, or repairs. It appears to be all original with some paint losses as you can see from the photos. The screws holding the bank together are replacement screws. It is interesting to note that the screw holding the two halves of the dog is made of two parts an adapter extension and a short screw. It would appear that whoever tried to put the bank together could not find a screw of the proper length. Again, the bank is in very good condition with some minimum paint losses (top of fido’s head and in the front of his right paws as well as a few spots on the back, around the base of the ears and around the screw), some scratches, a few dings, and some minor rust signs on the outside. The bank is soiled and could use a good cleaning. Other than that, the bank looks great and would display nicely in any collection.
